Section I Step 1: Verify External IP and Port

In order for any client to communicate with a server, the client needs two pieces of information: the IP address and port of the server. Such an IP address and port are referred to as the "External IP" and "External Port" of the server.

In K-Secure VPN^™ Server we can define the server's external IP and port in the Options/Server page. Now launch K-Secure VPN^™ Server and click Settings located at the top/right of the window. In the K-Secure VPN Server Options window that pops up, click Server in the list box.

Before we go to the next step, you need to make sure the External IP and Port are set correctly. Typically, we can get the IP address of a Windows machine through the ipconfig DOS command. However, if your server uses an internal DHCP address or is behind a firewall, you will need to consult your IT administrator to find out how an outside client can reach your server at the port we specify here.
Note: You may click Fill In My IP to get your external IP address as seen from a computer out of your local network.

For the port numbers, you can set them to any number between 1025 and 65534 (inclusive). Make sure the Listening Port is the same as the External Port unless you IT administrator tells you otherwise. While we use port 1989 in this tutorial, you shall change this to a suitable port number in your network - ask your IT administrator when you are in doubt.

When you are done setting your external IP and port, click Apply and OK. This will close the Options window. When you are ready, we can go to the next step.
