Quick Start Tutorial

Section III Step 2: Assigning a Virtual IP to the Proxy Agent

K-Secure VPN Server assigns fixed virtual IPs based on 1 to 5 conditions. In this step we'll assign 2 virtual IPs to our client computers, based on a single condition - the Computer Name of the client.

To find the computer name of a client, go to the client computer and follow these steps.

  1. On the Windows Desktop, right-click "My Computer" and select "Properties";
  2. In the System Properties window, select the "Computer Name" tab;
  3. Take note of the Full computer name;

Now go to the server computer and launch K-Secure VPN Server. Click IP Assignments on the left side, and then click Create at the bottom of the window. The Virtual IP Assignment window shall come up.

Fill in the Computer name on the top, and fill in Virtual IP Address with the virtual IP address we want to assign, and then click OK. In this tutorial, JOHN-PC is assigned virtual IP 192.168.1.2 and AMY-PC is assigned virtual IP 192.168.1.3.

When a fixed virtual IP is assigned this way, next time when the client connects to our server it will always be assigned the virtual IP address as long as the computer name remains unchanged. To verify the correct virtual IP is indeed assigned to AMY-PC, follow these steps:

  1. Start K-Secure VPN Server;
  2. From AMY-PC, launch K-Secure VPN Client, click Client Status, and then click Start VPN Client;
  3. From the server computer, launch K-Secure VPN Server and click Peers192.168.1.3 under the "Virtual IP" column;

We are now ready to create the Proxy Rule. Click next so we get our hands dirty.
